XAP-03 is a non-halogenated flame retardant based on APP-1 which develops its effectiveness through phosphorus / nitrogen synergism. When incorporated into thermoplastics, it exhibits high processing stability. XAP-03differs in its mode of action from chlorine- or bromine-containing flame retardants by achieving its effect through intumescence. The thermoplastic material foams on exposure to flame. The carbon foam layer so formed protects the polymer through its heat-insulating effect, reduces fur-ther oxygen access and prevents dripping of the thermoplastic.
Applications:
XAP-03 may be used in poly-propylene, PP-copolymers and PP-blends. The application areas are nearly the same as for XAP-02.
Compared to XAP-02, XAP-03 shows an improved thermal stability, which allows an approx. 30°C larger processing window. In compounding of XAP-03, a reduced water uptake, less contamination of the water bath and less soapiness of the polymer strength is observed.
XAP-03 is a suitable non-halogenated flame retardant for polyurethane foams. If handling of XAP-03 as a solid is not possible we recommend the dosage of the flame retardant by preparing an XAP-03/polyol-suspension. Because of the low acid number ofXAP-03 it is also possible to incorporate this flame retardant in anXAP-03/isocyanate suspension. To prevent the solid from settling the XAP-03 suspensions should be stirred or circulated by pump.
